Hanging Canvas Art Like a Pro

You've found the perfect canvas art — now hang it perfectly. The right technique makes the difference between a gallery-quality display and a crooked disappointment.

Tools You'll Need

Tape measure and pencil
Level (or phone app)
Hammer and nail or wall hooks
Painter's tape
Stud finder (for heavy pieces)
Wall anchors (for drywall)

The Golden Rule: Right Height

57–60 inches from floor to centre — the museum standard. Not the top, not the bottom — the centre.

The Math

Canvas height ÷ 2 = distance from centre to top
Measure from top of canvas to hanging wire when taut
58" + (height ÷ 2) - wire distance = nail height from floor

Example: 24" tall canvas, wire 2" from top → 58 + 12 - 2 = 68" from floor.

Hanging Above Furniture

Above a Sofa

6–8 inches between sofa and canvas bottom
Art should span ~two-thirds the sofa width

Above a Bed

8–10 inches above headboard
Don't exceed headboard width
Centre with the bed, not the wall

Drywall
